In a surprising turn of events, Kamala Harris has agreed to participate in a vice presidential debate with former President Donald Trump’s yet-to-be-named running mate. This announcement comes just a day after Trump and President Joe Biden agreed to two presidential debates.

The Biden-Harris campaign confirmed on Thursday that they have accepted an invitation from CBS News to take part in a VP debate scheduled for either July 23 or August 13. This decision follows the agreement between Biden and Trump to face off in two presidential debates on June 27 and September 10, hosted by CNN and ABC News.

If the VP debate takes place on July 23, it will coincide with the Republican National Convention, where Trump has hinted at potentially announcing his running mate. Among the contenders for the position are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Ohio Senator JD Vance, former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

The Biden-Harris campaign expressed their eagerness for the Trump campaign to confirm one of the proposed dates, stating, “We look forward to the Trump campaign accepting one of these dates so that the full debate calendar for this campaign can be set.”

Similar to the presidential debates, the VP debate will adhere to strict rules, including no in-person audience, time limits on answers, alternating speaking opportunities for candidates, and controlled microphone access.

This early debate schedule marks a departure from previous campaigns, with the VP debate set to take place much earlier in the year than in past elections. The anticipation for this high-stakes showdown is already building as the political landscape continues to evolve.
