Kamala Harris Makes History as First Woman Vice President of the United States

In a historic moment for the United States, Kamala Harris has been elected as the first woman vice president. Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent, will also be the first Black woman and African American to hold the position. The former attorney general of California has shattered barriers by becoming the first person of Indian descent to hold a national office in the country.

“This election is about so much more than @JoeBiden or me. It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started,” Harris tweeted following the election results. Her running mate, Democrat Joe Biden, defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States.

Harris, a rising star in Democratic politics, was chosen by Biden as his running mate after ending her own presidential campaign in 2020. The duo will be sworn in as president and vice president on January 20.

Throughout the campaign, Harris has embraced her Indian heritage, with her name Kamala meaning “lotus flower” in Sanskrit. She has spoken fondly of her mother’s efforts to instill a love of their Indian roots in her and her sister Maya.

Harris’ victory is seen as a significant moment for Black women and people of color in politics, with the potential to inspire more diverse representation in leadership roles. Her mother’s teachings and her own experiences as a Black woman have shaped her perspective and approach to addressing issues of systemic racism.

As Harris prepares to take on her new role, the nation eagerly anticipates the impact she will have as the first woman vice president of the United States.
