Kaua‘i High School sweeps KIF tennis finals

In an exciting match at the Kaua‘i High School tennis courts, Dillon Fulks of Kaua‘i High School secured a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Michael Fitzgerald of Island School, clinching the Central Pacific Bank KIF Boys Singles champion title. This win marked the second time Fulks defeated Fitzgerald during this year’s Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis season.

Kaua‘i High School tennis coach Jennifer Hreljac expressed pride in her team’s performance, with all finalists qualifying for the 2024 Island Insurance Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state tournament hailing from Kaua‘i High and Island School. Kaua‘i High School will be sending eight players to states, while Island School qualified four players, including Fitzgerald.

In the girls singles category, freshman Laney Carvalho emerged victorious, defeating Lillah Hamid of Island School in a hard-fought match. Carvalho’s journey to the title included overcoming tough opponents like Raine Hannsz of Kapa‘a and Ocean Amador.

Additionally, Kaua‘i High School added four more players to the state-bound roster with Mia Marty and Taylee Yoshimoto clinching the girls doubles title, and Issac Mirey and Rasil Manandhar securing a spot in the state tournament in the boys doubles category.

The state-bound players will also be recognized as KIF All Stars for tennis. The state tennis tournament is scheduled to take place from May 9 through 11 at Central O‘ahu Regional Park, where these talented athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their skills on a larger stage.
