Nevis High School graduate Michael Kempnich has made a name for himself in the science field, specializing in plasma cells and their importance in immune system functioning. After graduating in 2009, Kempnich pursued his passion for science, eventually earning a master’s degree in marine microbiology from the University of California Santa Cruz.

Kempnich’s career took an unexpected turn towards medical research, where he now works for a biotech startup in San Jose called Applied Cells Inc. He is involved in developing a machine that separates specific populations of white blood cells from human blood, bone marrow, or tissue samples using acoustic and magnetic separation techniques. This technology has applications in cancer and immunology research, as well as other areas like plant cell research.

In addition to his work, Kempnich enjoys living in California with his wife, Annie, whom he met while attending the University of Minnesota. The couple resides in the Santa Cruz mountains, surrounded by redwoods and close to popular outdoor destinations like Henry Cowell State Park and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Kempnich’s job also takes him on trips across the U.S. and internationally to demonstrate the machine to potential customers.
