Kennesaw State graduate embodies determination through multidisciplinary studies

Kim Amaya, a soon-to-be graduate of Kennesaw State University, has overcome numerous obstacles to achieve her dream of obtaining a college degree. Arriving in the United States from El Salvador at the age of 3, Amaya has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for herself that her parents never had.

Despite facing financial challenges and feeling lost in her early college years, Amaya persevered. Working multiple jobs to afford her education at Georgia Highlands College, she eventually transferred to KSU to study modern language and culture. Alongside her studies, she continued to work full-time and part-time jobs, all while maintaining a passion for education and community involvement.

A pivotal moment in Amaya’s journey came during a conversation with her professor, Arturo Matute Castro, who recognized her determination and wisdom beyond her years. Encouraged by his words, Amaya pushed forward and is now set to graduate with a 4.0 GPA, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree.

Looking ahead, Amaya plans to pursue a career in teaching Spanish and hopes to inspire Latino immigrant students to pursue higher education. She also aims to begin a master’s program in educational leadership and eventually become a school administrator.

Amaya’s story is a testament to hard work, determination, and the power of education to change lives. Her journey from a young immigrant to a college graduate is an inspiration to all who face challenges in pursuit of their dreams.
