Heavy flooding in Kenya has left at least 91 people missing, with rescuers working tirelessly to locate them. The interior ministry reported that 46 people were killed in a mudslide and flash floods in Mai Mahiu town in central Kenya, with survivors recounting the devastation caused by the rushing waters.
Residents like Anne Gachie described the terrifying moment when their homes were engulfed by water, sweeping away everything in its path. The interior ministry stated that 53 people were missing in Mai Mahiu, while the Kenya Red Cross reported 76 missing individuals.
The total death toll from heavy rains and flooding in Kenya has reached 169, with over 185,000 people displaced from their homes. The impact of the extreme weather has also been felt in neighboring countries like Tanzania and Burundi, where dozens have died and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
In Garissa county, four people lost their lives when their boat capsized, and 16 others are reported missing. This latest disaster comes after a similar tragedy late last year, where 120 people died from flooding caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon.
As climate change continues to fuel more intense and frequent extreme weather events, the need for preparedness and disaster response becomes increasingly crucial in the face of such natural disasters.
