Heavy rains in Kenya have led to devastating floods, with the Kenya Red Cross Society reporting 38 deaths and over 11,000 people displaced. Venant Ndigila, head of operations at the humanitarian agency, described the situation as a disaster for Kenyans, especially in terms of shelter needs for affected families.
The recent increase in rainfall intensity has caused rivers to overflow, with Susan Ubbaga from Machakos County recounting how the Athi River flooded her home, forcing her and others to seek refuge in rental houses. Despite the ongoing risk of more torrential rains, Ubbaga expressed her inability to afford moving out of her house, leaving her belongings elevated in preparation for potential flooding.
Authorities and humanitarian agencies have issued warnings for the population to avoid flooded areas, seek higher ground, and refrain from driving during heavy rainfall. Ndigila emphasized the importance of preemptive displacement to prevent further loss of lives and livelihoods.
Neighboring Somalia is also facing similar challenges, with alerts issued in multiple regions to prevent harm, displacement, and casualties from flooding. As the rainy season continues, the need for proactive measures and community cooperation remains crucial to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in the region.
