Key Races to Watch in the EU Parliament Elections

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In the upcoming EU elections, several key countries are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the European Parliament. Here’s a look at some of the key places to watch in the June 6-9 elections:

In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s right-wing populist Fidesz party is facing a formidable challenge from a new opposition force led by former Fidesz insider Péter Magyar. Magyar’s party, Respect and Freedom (TISZA), has gained momentum by presenting itself as a more centrist alternative to Orbán’s brand of illiberal populism. The election in Hungary is expected to be a close contest, with Fidesz likely to lose at least one seat in the parliament.

In Italy, Premier Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, with neo-fascist roots, is forecast to expand its number of seats in the European Parliament. Meloni’s pro-Ukraine and Israel policies have garnered support from centrist allies, but she is also leading culture wars at home to preserve her far-right credentials.

In France, far-right leader Marine Le Pen and her National Rally party are expected to win the most of France’s 81 seats in the EU elections. Le Pen’s anti-immigration and nationalist ideas have resonated with voters dissatisfied with President Emmanuel Macron’s management of the economy and other issues.

In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany party is hoping to make gains in the European election, despite facing setbacks in recent months. The party’s performance will be closely watched as it looks to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction with the mainstream center-left governing coalition.

In Slovakia, the recent attempt to assassinate populist Prime Minister Robert Fico is expected to boost voter turnout and increase the chances of his leftist Smer party winning the election. Fico’s party is in a close race against the main opposition Progressive Slovakia party, with other political groups also vying for seats in the European Parliament.

Overall, the EU elections in these key countries will have far-reaching implications for the future direction of the European Parliament and the EU as a whole. Stay tuned for more updates on this crucial political event.
