Kenyan athlete Samuel Kibathi secured a double victory for his country at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade 24. In a thrilling race, Kibathi displayed impeccable timing to clinch both the individual and team titles in the U20 men’s category.
The race started with a strong showing from Ethiopian runners, but Kibathi and his Kenyan teammates quickly took control. Matthew Kipkoech Kipruto and Charles Rotich led the pack early on, with Shadrack Rono Kipkemei and Johana Erot close behind.
As the race progressed, the lead changed hands multiple times, with Ethiopian and Ugandan runners also vying for the top positions. However, Kibathi remained focused and made his move on the final lap, ultimately crossing the finish line in 22:40 to claim the gold medal.
Ethiopia’s Mezgebu Sime put up a strong fight and finished just one second behind Kibathi to take the silver medal, while Kipruto secured the bronze.
With four Kenyan runners finishing in the top six, the team also retained their title, showcasing their dominance in the competition. Ethiopia and Uganda claimed the silver and bronze team medals, respectively.
