Kim Godwin, the first Black woman to lead a network news division, has stepped down as ABC News president after three years in the role. This move comes after Walt Disney Co. installed Debra O’Connell to oversee the news division earlier this year.

Godwin, who was recruited from CBS News, faced challenges during her tenure, including the messy departures of anchors from the network’s flagship programs, “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America.” Despite these challenges, ABC News remained ahead of its competitors in the ratings.

In a note to staff, Godwin expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead a team known for its trust, integrity, and determination to be the best in the business. She acknowledged the significance of being the first Black woman in such a prominent broadcast news role.

Having worked at ABC, CBS, NBC, and multiple local news stations, Godwin announced her retirement from the industry. She leaves with her head held high and wishes the team continued success.

Debra O’Connell will take over as the interim head of ABC News as the network looks ahead. Godwin’s departure marks the end of a chapter in ABC News’ history, but the legacy of her leadership as the first Black woman to hold such a position will be remembered.
