Residents in Faversham, Kent, are up in arms over King Charles’ plans to build an “ideal town” on 320 acres of farmland in the area. The 75-year-old monarch’s proposal to construct 2,500 homes has sparked outrage among locals who fear the transformation of their beloved countryside into an “urban mass”.

The plans, first announced in 2018 when Charles was still Prince, were touted as a sustainable development that prioritized environmental conservation. However, residents argue that the project contradicts the King’s supposed commitment to protecting the environment.

Richard Winnett, a resident, expressed his concerns, stating, “The Duchy proposes such a development with the consequential loss of a huge area of fine productive agricultural land. This seems totally at odds with HRH’s public stance on environmental and farming issues.”

Sarah Vomley echoed these sentiments, saying, “I always thought the Duchy cared about the environment and green spaces, seems I was wrong. They also can’t (or won’t) maintain the houses they already have.”

While Prince William, who inherited the Duchy of Cornwall estate, has been learning about the role, it remains to be seen if he will intervene in the Faversham plans. Meanwhile, King Charles is determined to proceed with plans for a state visit to Australia later this year after positive progress in his cancer treatment. The monarch’s enthusiasm for the trip signals his commitment to fulfilling his royal duties despite health challenges.
