King Charles named patron of The R&A in Golf Business News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has made a significant announcement, revealing that His Majesty, King Charles III has accepted the prestigious patronage of the club. This follows in the footsteps of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who held the patronage for an impressive 70 years.

Martin Slumbers, Secretary of The R&A, expressed the club’s immense pride in having the King accept this role. He stated, “We are delighted and deeply honored that The King has accepted patronage of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. We now look forward to His Majesty’s support for the work of the club and our commitment to the sport of golf across the world.”

In addition to this royal news, the R&A also announced the appointment of Ian Pattinson as the captain for the upcoming term in 2024/25. Pattinson, a member of The R&A since 1989, has an impressive track record of service to the club and the R&A Group over the past 30 years. He has held various key roles within the organization, including Chairman of the Rules of Golf and the Equipment Standards Committees.

Pattinson’s extensive experience in the world of golf, including serving as a Rules Official at prestigious events like The Open and the Masters, makes him a fitting choice for the role of captain. His term will officially begin on September 20, marked by the traditional driving-in ceremony on the first tee of the Old Course.

The golfing community eagerly anticipates the contributions and leadership that both King Charles III and Ian Pattinson will bring to The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in the coming years.
