Britain’s King Charles is set to make a triumphant return to public duties next week after battling cancer, Buckingham Palace announced. The 75-year-old monarch was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, leading him to undergo treatment and take a period of rest.
Despite his health challenges, King Charles continued with official state business, but postponed public engagements to focus on his recovery. Now, after making good progress, he is ready to resume some public-facing duties.
A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace expressed the king’s gratitude to his medical team for their care and expertise, stating that doctors are pleased with his progress so far. While the exact duration of his treatment remains uncertain, his doctors are optimistic about his continued recovery.
To mark his return, King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit a cancer treatment centre in London next Tuesday. Additionally, a state visit from the Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako is scheduled for late June.
However, the king will not be carrying out his usual summer programme, as plans will be adjusted in consultation with his medical team to ensure his continued recovery. The news of his return was met with excitement, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calling it “brilliant news.”
The king’s absence coincided with news of his daughter-in-law Kate undergoing preventative chemotherapy after a cancer diagnosis. As King Charles prepares to resume his duties, the royal family continues to navigate health challenges with resilience and grace.
