Zolten Poulsen, of Maui Prep, showcased his surfing prowess once again by winning his third MIL contest of the season at boys No. 1. The King Kekaulike boys and Maui Prep girls emerged victorious at the overall Maui Interscholastic League surf titles held at Hookipa Beach Park on Saturday.
The competition at Hookipa marked the fourth and final event for the team competition, following contests at D.T. Fleming Beach Park, Kahului Harbor, and Koki Beach. The boys and girls overall individual titles are set to be decided at Koki Beach on May 4.
Both King Kekaulike and Maui Prep dominated the surf meets, with each team winning three out of the four contests. Na Alii secured their third consecutive victory, while Na Pueo clinched their second straight win. Maui Prep also claimed the opening contest at Fleming.
For King Kekaulike, it was a stellar performance at their home break as they triumphed in four out of the five divisions. The team’s success was a result of a total team effort, with 10 different surfers contributing to their point total throughout the season.
Maui Prep’s win was also a collective effort, with eight out of 11 girls on the roster showcasing their surfing skills during the season. The team’s camaraderie and hard work were evident as they clinched the MIL overall title.
The surf conditions in West Maui played a crucial role in the teams’ improvement, with Maui Prep coach Lyndee Sprenger crediting the consistent waves for their success. The competition at Hookipa saw standout performances from Zoe Offergeld, Chase Burnes, Otis Buckingham, and Sophia Bunch, who all emerged victorious in their respective categories.
Overall, the MIL surf meet at Hookipa Beach Park was a thrilling display of talent and teamwork, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the season at Koki Beach.
