The barricades surrounding a pro-Palestinian encampment at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., have sparked controversy as university officials have deemed them a safety risk. Protesters erected the barricades on Wednesday night, citing safety concerns and as a show of their determination to stay until their demands are met.
The demands of the protesters include the complete divestment of the university’s $150-million investment in Israeli-linked companies and a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. Yara Hussein, a student organizer, expressed frustration with the university’s slow response to their demands, stating that they will continue to occupy the space until their voices are heard.
University officials have met with the protesters and are considering their demands. However, concerns have been raised by administrative staff and Kingston Fire & Rescue regarding fire safety, as the barricades block emergency lanes and pose a hazard.
Despite these concerns, protesters, led by student Jake Morrow, remain steadfast in their cause. Morrow emphasized the urgency of their demands by highlighting the ongoing crisis in Gaza, stating that they will continue their protest even through convocation, when the campus will have heightened visibility.
The standoff between the protesters and the university shows no signs of resolution, with both sides standing firm in their positions. The situation remains tense as both parties work towards finding a solution that ensures both safety and the acknowledgment of the protesters’ demands.
