Kishida and Attal pledge to strengthen Japan-France relations

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan and French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal have come together to strengthen bilateral ties between their countries in various key areas. The leaders met in Paris and discussed expanding cooperation in the economy, security, and culture sectors.

One of the highlights of their meeting was the discussion on increasing people-to-people exchanges through major upcoming events like the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka. Attal also expressed his condolences over the recent passing of renowned Japanese manga artist Akira Toriyama, known for his iconic “Dragon Ball” series, a beloved work in France as well.

In a gesture of goodwill, Kishida presented Attal with a traditional Japanese wooden doll, a kokeshi, based on a character from the “Dragon Ball” series. The exchange of cultural gifts symbolized the deepening ties between the two nations.

Furthermore, Economy Minister Ken Saito and his French counterpart, Bruno Le Maire, also met to discuss strengthening cooperation in the supply of critical minerals, including rare earths. Both countries agreed to share information on supply chains, mining, and smelting technologies to ensure a stable supply of these essential resources.

The ministers emphasized the importance of building resilient and transparent critical mineral supply chains, especially as these minerals are crucial for products like batteries for electric vehicles. Japan and France also pledged to promote dialogue with companies and explore ways to support resource-rich countries in this vital sector.
