Nationwide Tutor Shortage Leaves Parents and Students Struggling

As the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund nears its expiration, school districts across the country are grappling with the aftermath of the pandemic. Knox County Schools received a significant boost from federal pandemic relief measures, but now they must decide how to sustain crucial programs like tutoring without the temporary funding.

The district used the ESSER funds to address learning gaps, provide technology upgrades, and support career empowerment initiatives. However, with the funds running out, tough decisions lie ahead for administrators.

Superintendent Jon Rysewyk emphasized the importance of using the one-time dollars sustainably. The district invested in laptops for all students, interactive displays for classrooms, and hired tutors and career coaches to support students in need.

Despite the success of the tutoring program, which helped mend learning gaps, the temporary nature of the funding means that positions will be cut or moved as the district realigns its budget. Retired teachers may have the opportunity to continue serving as part-time literacy tutors to support students with the greatest needs.

As the school board prepares to vote on the upcoming academic year budget, the community is anxiously awaiting the outcome. The loss of ESSER funds will undoubtedly impact staffing and programs, but the district remains committed to finding solutions to continue supporting students in their academic journey.
