Kremlin says Switzerland conference on Ukraine is pointless without Russia | World News

The Kremlin has dismissed a planned summit in Switzerland aimed at discussing the Ukraine conflict, stating that it would be futile without the participation of Russia. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman, emphasized the importance of Russia’s involvement in any discussions regarding security issues that concern the country.

“Without Russia, discussing security issues that concern us is absolutely futile,” Peskov told the Russian newspaper Izvestia. He expressed skepticism about the summit, suggesting that it may result in empty discussions with no tangible outcomes.

Switzerland, however, remains committed to hosting the summit on June 15-16 near Lucerne, with over 50 countries already signed up to participate. The Swiss government is actively seeking more participants from the Global South and China.

Peskov noted that while a balanced approach from China could enhance the conference’s credibility, it would not necessarily improve its effectiveness. Despite Russia’s reservations, countries from South America, Africa, and the Middle East have confirmed their attendance.

Swiss President Viola Amherd, who agreed to host the summit at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, highlighted the diverse participation expected at the event. The summit aims to pave the way for a peace process in Ukraine, but Russia’s absence could significantly impact its potential outcomes.
