The Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) has reassured the public that the Turkwel dam remains safe amidst heavy rains and ongoing floods in the country. Managing Director Sammy Naporos stated that the dam is currently at 1135 meters above sea level, with 15 meters to go before it spills over.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has identified 192 dams in various regions as high risk, prompting the government to evacuate residents near these areas to safety. Naporos also cautioned against fishing in the dam at night due to strong winds, advising daytime fishermen to wear life-saving jackets.
With the high inflow of rivers into Lake Turkana, residents are urged to be cautious of possible floods. Naporos emphasized the need for vigilance and adherence to government directives to prevent loss of lives and property. The countrywide flood tragedy has already claimed 228 lives and displaced over 212,000 people.
As the situation remains critical, Kenyans are urged to stay informed and follow safety guidelines. Naporos highlighted the risk of flooding in low-lying areas near Lake Turkana, emphasizing the need for preparedness and caution. The government continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of all citizens.
