KZN emerges as a prime tourism investment hub at World Travel Market Africa

A portfolio of catalytic tourism projects in KwaZulu-Natal valued at R9.4 billion was showcased at the Tourism Investment Forum Africa, held as part of the World Travel Market Africa (WTM Africa). The event brought together 6,000 travel industry professionals to explore opportunities in the African travel industry.

Dr. Thandeka Ellenson, the acting head of the Department of Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs, outlined the diverse range of projects spread across KwaZulu-Natal. These projects, ranging from R3 million to R4 billion, aim to enhance the province’s tourism offerings and attract investment.

Mr. Sibusiso Gumbi, the acting CEO of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, emphasized the importance of tourism development in upgrading and expanding the province’s offerings. He highlighted the role of new products and experiences in increasing competitiveness and driving economic growth.

With the tourism sector showing signs of recovery post-COVID-19, investors are increasingly interested in the potential returns in the industry. Mr. Sihle Ngcamu, acting CEO of Trade and Investment KZN, noted the strong investor interest in the sector, supported by government initiatives to facilitate investment-friendly policies.

The projects include private sector-led developments such as resorts, cultural centers, and eco-tourism initiatives. These projects are expected to create thousands of jobs and drive transformation in the tourism sector, benefiting local communities and attracting visitors from around the world.
