KZN shines as a top tourism investment spot at World Travel Market Africa

A portfolio of catalytic tourism projects in KwaZulu-Natal valued at R9.4 billion was unveiled at the Tourism Investment Forum Africa, held as part of the World Travel Market Africa (WTM Africa) event. The forum, which brought together 6,000 travel industry professionals from around the world, showcased a range of projects aimed at boosting tourism in the region.

Dr. Thandeka Ellenson, the acting head of department for Economic Development Tourism and Environmental Affairs, outlined the details of the projects, which span from Durban to Kosi Bay, the Midlands, Drakensberg, and the South Coast. These projects, ranging from R3 million to R4 billion in value, are set to enhance KwaZulu-Natal’s tourism offerings and attract investment to the region.

Mr. Sibusiso Gumbi, the acting chief executive of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN), emphasized the importance of tourism development in the province and highlighted the potential for growth and economic impact. He noted that new products and experiences are crucial for attracting visitors and increasing the competitiveness of the destination.

With the return of pre-COVID-19 tourist numbers and the projected global growth of the tourism sector, investors are showing keen interest in the opportunities presented in KwaZulu-Natal. Mr. Sihle Ngcamu, acting CEO of Trade and Investment KZN, expressed confidence in the sector’s potential for substantial returns and highlighted the support from the provincial government in facilitating investor-friendly policies.

The projects include a mix of private sector-led initiatives, such as resorts, cultural centers, theme parks, and eco-tourism projects. These developments aim to create jobs and drive transformation in the tourism sector, benefiting both local communities and the economy. Overall, the tourism sector in KwaZulu-Natal is poised for a remarkable rebound, with strong investor interest and a focus on sustainable growth.
