Philip Barbour Softball Advances in Region II Tournament with 9-1 Win Over Robert C. Byrd

In a thrilling Class AA, Region II, Section 1 elimination game, the Philip Barbour Lady Colts secured a dominant 9-1 victory over Robert C. Byrd on Friday night. The win keeps the Lady Colts (20-3) alive in the tournament as they now prepare to face off against third-seed Lincoln in the championship round on Monday.

Avery McDaniel was the star of the game for Philip Barbour, showcasing her skills both on the mound and at the plate. The junior pitcher twirled a one-hitter, striking out eight batters and not allowing any walks over six innings. McDaniel also made a huge impact with her bat, going a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate, including a two-run homer in the first inning to kickstart the Lady Colts’ offense.

The first inning saw Philip Barbour jump out to an early lead, scoring five runs thanks to hits from Katielynn Warner, Katie Kennedy, and McDaniel. The Lady Colts continued to add to their lead throughout the game, with Warner delivering a two-run single in the sixth inning to enforce the mercy rule and end the game.

In addition to McDaniel’s standout performance, Olivia Wilmoth also had a strong showing at the plate with three hits, while Warner and Payton Holbert contributed two hits each. On the other side, Gina Alvaro managed the lone hit for Robert C. Byrd, who finished their season with a record of 18-11.

With the win, Philip Barbour now sets their sights on the championship round, where they will look to secure a spot in the state tournament with another victory.
