Lakes track team secures victory at home regionals: Smooth sailing to success | News, Sports, Jobs

The Lake Linden-Hubbell track team had a stellar performance at the MHSAA U.P. Division 3 Region 47 meet on Monday, with both the girls and boys teams coming out on top. The girls’ team, led by coach Gary Gusfriedi, secured a first-place finish with 59 points, beating out Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in second place with 46 points. The boys’ team also dominated the competition, earning a first-place score of 64.

Key athletes from the boys’ team included Gabe Popko, who won both the discus and shot put, and Josh Daavettila, who excelled in the high jump. Matthew Jokela showcased his sprinting skills by winning the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Coach Brett Gervais praised the team’s performance and highlighted their strong representation in the upcoming U.P. Finals.

On the girls’ side, junior Emily Jokela stood out with her exceptional performance in multiple events. She clinched first place in the 100 and 400-meter dashes, as well as the 300-meter hurdles. Other standout athletes included Maddy Dudenas in shot put, Cleo Milkey in long jump, and Abi Codere in pole vault.

Overall, the Lake Linden-Hubbell track team’s success at the regional meet was a result of hard work and dedication. Coach Gusfriedi commended the team for peaking at the right time and expressed pride in their accomplishments throughout the season. With their impressive performance, the team is poised for success at the upcoming U.P. Finals in Kingsford on June 1.
