Large outbreak in Congo reveals new strain of mpox virus

Congo is currently facing its largest mpox outbreak, with over 4,500 suspected cases and nearly 300 deaths reported since January. Scientists have identified a new form of the disease in a mining town that could potentially spread more easily among people.

The outbreak has been declared a health emergency by the World Health Organization, as the numbers have tripled compared to the same period last year. The genetic mutations in the mpox virus detected in Kamituga, eastern Congo, suggest ongoing transmission among humans, even in areas where contact with wild animals, the natural carriers of the disease, is limited.

Dr. Placide Mbala-Kingebeni, the lead researcher of the study, stated that the new form of mpox presents with milder lesions on the genitals, making it harder to diagnose. This new version also seems to have a lower death rate compared to previous outbreaks in Africa.

Experts warn that the new mutations in the virus could lead to more consequential outbreaks, especially since less than half of the people with mpox in Congo are being tested. There is a concern that without proactive measures, the disease could continue to spread silently among the population.

Efforts are being made to secure vaccines for high-risk provinces in Congo, with discussions ongoing with donor countries like Japan. The urgency to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread is evident, as the new form of mpox poses a significant threat to public health in the region.
