Large Section of Wyoming’s Teton Pass Collapses; Timeline for Road Reconstruction Uncertain

**Teton Pass Collapse: A Critical Link Severed, Prompting Emergency Response**

JACKSON, Wyo. — A vital artery connecting small towns in eastern Idaho with the bustling tourist hub of Jackson, Wyoming, has been severed following the catastrophic collapse of a significant portion of the Teton Pass. The incident, which left a massive dirt gash across the mountainous route, has sparked an emergency response and raised concerns about the impact on local communities and economies.

The collapse occurred in the early hours of Saturday, in an area already under scrutiny by authorities due to a mudslide and a worrying crack and drop in the road surface identified earlier in the week. The road had been closed as a precaution, a move that likely prevented any injuries or loss of life when the section gave way.

“This was a close call. We were very, very lucky that no crews were harmed. No equipment was damaged,” said Stephanie Harsha, a spokesperson for District 3 of the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). The department has been on high alert since Thursday, when a motorcycle crash brought the initial road damage to attention.

Efforts to manage the situation included a temporary patching of the road, allowing traffic to resume briefly. However, the discovery of a mudslide and the worsening condition of the road led to a renewed closure. By early Friday, the road had “catastrophically failed,” according to WYDOT, leaving officials to grapple with the challenge of restoring access.

Governor Mark Gordon has declared an emergency, facilitating the state’s request for additional resources from the Federal Highway Administration to begin repairs. “We are closely monitoring this ongoing situation,” Gordon stated, acknowledging the significant disruption caused to Teton County residents, commuters, and the local economy.

The collapse has forced commuters and travelers to detour an additional 60 miles, significantly impacting daily routines and operational logistics for many. The Teton Pass is not only a critical commuter route but also a key access point to the popular Grand Teton National Park, underscoring the urgency of finding a long-term solution to rebuild this crucial roadway.

As engineers and geologists continue their assessments, the community braces for the challenges ahead, hopeful for a swift and sustainable resolution to restore the lifeline that connects them.
