Larry Hogan promotes his support for codifying Roe v. Wade in new ad amidst challenging Senate race

Maryland’s Republican Senate Candidate Larry Hogan Takes Unique Stance on Abortion Rights

In a surprising move, Maryland’s Republican nominee for the US Senate, Larry Hogan, has come out swinging – on defense. Hogan, a former two-term governor of a solidly blue state, debuted his first ad of the 2024 general election cycle in which he made clear his stance on abortion rights.

In the ad, Hogan states that if elected, he will vote for legislation that would codify the protections for abortion rights in Roe vs Wade into federal law. This comes after the landmark Supreme Court case was overturned in 2022.

Hogan emphasizes his support for a woman’s right to choose, stating, “No one should come between a woman and her doctor.” However, there is a catch – as a Republican seeking to take a Democratic-held Senate seat in a closely divided chamber, Hogan’s vote for such legislation may never make it to the floor.

Despite this, Hogan’s aim with the ad is clear: to appeal to moderate Democrats and independents who have supported him in the past. He wants to remind voters that he is a moderate Republican, capable of winning in a Democratic stronghold like Maryland.

With Hogan set to face Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in the fall, the former governor is positioning himself as the centrist option in the race. It will be interesting to see how his support for abortion rights clashes with the broader themes of his party, especially with Donald Trump warning conservatives about the dangers of Democrats codifying Roe if they win the 2024 election.

Hogan’s message of support for abortion rights may set him apart from his party, but it remains to be seen if it will resonate with voters in the upcoming election.
