Latino Advocacy Groups Warn Trump’s Deportation Plans Threaten Democracy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Leaders of five Latino and immigrant rights’ organizations came together on Friday to denounce former President Donald J. Trump’s immigration proposals, calling them a threat to democracy and a form of constitutional overreach. The group, which included representatives from Voto Latino, UnidosUS Action Fund, Mi Familia Vota, America’s Voice, and Latino Victory Project, announced a joint investment of $50 million to mobilize Latino voters ahead of the November election.

During a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., the leaders criticized Trump’s rhetoric and policies, particularly his plans for mass deportations and his inflammatory language regarding migrants at the southern border. María Teresa Kumar, president of Voto Latino, emphasized that there is no one right way to be American and that Trump’s message to Hispanic voters was misguided.

The organizations highlighted the importance of preventing another Trump presidency, citing his history of divisive statements and actions against Latinos and immigrants. They also expressed concern about recent polls showing Trump in a close race with President Biden and growing support among Latino voters for stricter immigration measures.

In response to these challenges, the groups outlined their strategy to educate Latino voters about the Biden administration’s efforts to support the Hispanic community, including recent decisions to expand access to healthcare for undocumented immigrants. They emphasized the need to counter disinformation and ensure that Latino voters are informed about the candidates who will truly advocate for their interests.

Overall, the leaders stressed the importance of unity and mobilization within the Latino community to push back against harmful immigration policies and protect the democratic values that they hold dear.
