Legendary PBS News anchor Robert MacNeil passes away at 93

Renowned broadcast journalist Robert MacNeil, who co-anchored PBS nightly news for two decades, passed away at the age of 93, PBS announced on Friday. MacNeil, known for his erudite reporting and high journalistic standards, was remembered by colleagues and viewers alike for his principled and incisive approach to news.

Born in Montreal, Canada, MacNeil began his television career as a correspondent for NBC in London in 1960. He covered major international events such as the building of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis before transitioning to a US-based role in Washington, DC. In 1970, MacNeil joined PBS and formed a successful partnership with Jim Lehrer, leading the network’s coverage of the Watergate Hearings and co-founding the MacNeil/Lehrer Report, which later became PBS NewsHour.

During his tenure at PBS, MacNeil and Lehrer received numerous awards for their journalistic excellence, including Emmys and a Radio and Television Correspondents Association Award for congressional reporting. MacNeil retired from PBS in 1995 but continued to contribute to special coverage and authored several books, including “Do You Speak American?” which was adapted into a PBS documentary.
