Legendary PBS News anchor Robert MacNeil passes away at 93

Longtime broadcast journalist Robert MacNeil, known for his distinguished career in journalism, passed away at the age of 93, as announced by PBS. MacNeil, who co-anchored PBS nightly news for two decades, was praised for his erudite reporting and high journalistic standards.

Originally from Montreal, Canada, MacNeil began his television career as a correspondent for NBC in London in 1960. He covered major international events such as the building of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis before transitioning to a US-based role in Washington, DC. MacNeil was even in Dallas covering President John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination in November 1963.

In the early 1970s, MacNeil joined PBS and formed a successful partnership with fellow journalist Jim Lehrer. Together, they led PBS coverage of the Senate’s Watergate Hearings and co-founded the MacNeil/Lehrer Report, which later became PBS NewsHour. The duo received numerous journalism awards for their work, including two Emmys and a Radio and Television Correspondents Association Award for congressional reporting.

After leaving PBS in 1995, MacNeil continued to contribute periodically to special coverage and authored several books, including “Do You Speak American?” which was adapted into a PBS documentary in 2005. Known for his unwavering journalistic integrity, MacNeil’s legacy remains a symbol of excellence in American broadcast media.
