Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry President and CEO Danny Seiden recently expressed his disappointment in losing the NHL team to Utah, highlighting the economic impact and civic pride associated with professional sports teams in Arizona. Seiden emphasized the role of sports franchises in creating jobs, boosting local businesses, and enhancing the state’s brand on a national level.

With Arizona hosting major events like the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Fours, and upcoming NBA All-Star Games, the state has solidified its reputation as a sports destination. The economic impact of sports and sports tourism in Arizona amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars and over 300,000 jobs created.

Seiden urged the business community to take proactive measures to prevent future losses of sports franchises. He emphasized the importance of streamlining processes for new arena developments, avoiding complacency, and finding a sustainable solution for the Diamondbacks, whose lease expires in 2027.

Highlighting the positive contributions of the Diamondbacks to the community, Seiden called for lawmakers and the governor to support initiatives that would secure the team’s future in Arizona. He referenced the success of Proposition 302 in funding State Farm Stadium and suggested a similar model for the Diamondbacks.

In conclusion, Seiden emphasized the significance of sports franchises in Arizona’s business landscape and urged stakeholders to prioritize the retention and attraction of professional teams to the state. By working together, Arizona can continue to thrive as a sports hub and economic powerhouse.
