In a recent report released by the Social Security Administration, it was revealed that Liam and Olivia have once again secured the top spots for baby names in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive year in 2023. This annual list tracks the most popular names given to newborn boys and girls across the country.

Interestingly, Mateo has made its debut in the top 10 baby names list for the first time, showing a shift in naming trends. The data collected by the agency dates back to 1880, providing a historical perspective on the evolution of baby names in the United States.

Liam has maintained its dominance as the most popular name for boys for seven years in a row, while Olivia has held the top position for girls for five years, dethroning Emma from its previous five-year reign. Following Liam, other common names for boys include Noah, Oliver, and James, among others. For girls, Emma, Charlotte, and Amelia are among the popular choices.

The report also highlighted the impact of social media and popular culture on naming trends, with names like Izael and Chozen rising in popularity for boys, influenced by social media stars and television shows like Cobra Kai. Similarly, the name Kaeli saw a significant increase in popularity for girls, possibly due to the influence of YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen.

Overall, the data revealed a slight decrease in the American birthrate, with 3.58 million babies born in 2023 compared to 3.66 million in the previous year. This shift in naming trends reflects the changing cultural landscape and societal influences on parents’ choices for their newborns.
