Senator Lindsey Graham Sparks Controversy with Comments on Israel’s War on Gaza
Senator Lindsey Graham has ignited a firestorm of criticism after drawing comparisons between Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the US’s decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan during World War II. During an appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, the South Carolina Republican appeared to justify Israel’s offensive in Rafah, urging them to “do whatever you have to do.”
Graham defended the US’s decision to drop nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, calling it the “right decision” to end the war. His comments have been met with backlash, as the bombings resulted in the deaths of between 129,000 and 226,000 people, mostly civilians.
The senator’s controversial remarks did not stop there. He also previously urged the US to take military action against Iran, calling for parts of the country to be “blown off the map.”
As tensions between the US and Israel continue to escalate, President Joe Biden has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against further military action in Gaza. However, Netanyahu has pushed back, citing concerns about the potential increase in civilian casualties if precision weapons are halted.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has already led to more than 360,000 Palestinians fleeing the region, according to the United Nations. With the situation showing no signs of easing, the international community is closely watching the developments in the region.
