Live updates: Speaker Johnson demands resignation of Columbia president

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a powerful display of solidarity and courage, a Jewish student at Columbia University’s pro-Palestinian encampment is sharing her experience of facing harassment and discrimination on campus. Althea, who wears a Star of David necklace along with a keffiyeh, a symbol of Palestinian identity, has been subjected to hurtful labels such as “terrorist” and “Jew hater.”

Despite the backlash, Althea remains steadfast in her belief that Judaism and Palestinian liberation are interconnected. She emphasized the importance of combating both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, stating that they go hand in hand. Althea, who has roots in the Middle East as a Mizrahi Jew, highlighted the stark disparities she witnessed during a trip to Israel, where she saw the stark contrast between Israeli homes and Palestinian villages lacking basic resources.

The encampment at Columbia, where Althea resides, is a place of unity and understanding, where Muslim daily prayers are observed alongside the Jewish holiday of Passover. Althea expressed gratitude for the welcoming atmosphere within the encampment, where she participated in a Seder with Palestinian and Muslim students.

Despite facing adversity, Althea’s story serves as a reminder of the power of empathy and solidarity in bridging divides and fostering understanding among different communities. Her courage in standing up for what she believes in is an inspiration to all who seek to promote peace and justice in a complex and often divisive world.
