In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability and resilience, Portland International Airport (PDX) has unveiled its new parking, rental car services, and operations center additions. Designed to withstand seismic events and maintain critical functions, the $325 million project, known as PACR (Parking Additions and Consolidated Rental Car Facility), sets a new standard for environmentally efficient and traveler-friendly infrastructure.
The project, part of the larger PDX Next initiative, aims to improve the passenger experience while prioritizing sustainability and resilience. By consolidating long-term parking, rental car services, and critical airport operations in one location, the Port of Portland has created a seamless and efficient travel hub.
One of the key features of the PACR complex is the elimination of shuttle buses to offsite parking and rental car locations, reducing both traffic congestion and CO2 emissions. The multi-level parking structure includes 2,200 long-term parking stalls, ADA parking spots, and electric vehicle charging stations, making it convenient and eco-friendly for travelers.
In addition to its sustainable design, the PACR complex also incorporates resilient strategies to ensure airport operations remain functional following a major earthquake event. The building is designated as one of several statewide natural disaster emergency coordination stations, highlighting its importance in times of crisis.
The project’s success can be attributed to a collaborative approach that involved various stakeholders and partners, including JE Dunn, PAE, KPFF, and Mayer/Reed. By leveraging the progressive design-build delivery model, the team was able to overcome challenges and deliver a cutting-edge facility that exceeds expectations.
Overall, the PACR project represents a significant investment in infrastructure that not only enhances the passenger experience but also showcases the importance of sustainability and resilience in modern design. With its innovative strategies and forward-thinking approach, PDX is setting a new standard for airport facilities across the country.
