Local junior golfer competes at Augusta National | Local News, Sports, Employment

Nine-year-old Cameron Middleton recently fulfilled a dream by playing at the historic Augusta National Golf Course, the home of the Masters. Middleton, who became an Internet sensation during the pandemic by posting golf trick shots on Instagram, was selected to participate in the PGA Drive, Chip & Putt competition.

Having competed in Drive, Chip & Putt two other times, Middleton had to go through three qualifying rounds at the local and regional levels to earn his spot at Augusta. Despite facing stiff competition, Middleton finished ninth out of 10 participants in his age group.

Middleton’s mother, Gina, praised the golf club for providing an unforgettable experience for the young golfers, covering expenses such as airfare and hotels. The club also organized a special banquet and gave the kids a chance to visit areas of the course typically reserved for professional players.

Starting golf at the age of 3, Middleton quickly developed a passion for the sport, practicing five days a week and showcasing his skills through trick shots. His coach, Chase Marinell, described Middleton as one of the best talents he has seen in the area for someone his age.

Middleton’s success on the course has already earned him recognition, including an All-American title in the 6-to-8 age group. With the tournament season in full swing, Middleton aims to qualify for national events and continue honing his skills with the goal of one day becoming a professional golfer.

As for the future, Middleton dreams of winning a green jacket at the Masters, while his mother hopes his golfing prowess will secure him a scholarship for college. With his talent and dedication, Middleton’s golfing journey is one to watch.
