Local residents in Majorca encouraged to visit beaches as British tourists abandon deserted island

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The popular holiday destination of Majorca is facing a crisis as bar owners and hospitality workers express concerns over the impact of recent protests on UK tourism. The party capital of Magaluf is reportedly “half empty,” with bars, restaurants, and hotels deserted by UK tourists.

Local newspaper Majorca Daily Bulletin highlighted the worrying situation, stating that the resort appears unusually quiet for this time of year. The lack of tourists has raised alarm bells among the business community, with some attributing the decline to ongoing protests against mass tourism.

Protest group Majorca Platja Tour has called on Mallorcans to join a fresh demonstration against tourist overcrowding by storming the island’s beaches. The first protest is scheduled for this Saturday in Colònia de Sant Jordi, with a larger demonstration planned for Sunday, June 16.

Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas weighed in on the situation, warning that Mallorcans may face a shortage of work if tourism-phobic messages continue to deter visitors. In response, the protest group vowed to reclaim the beaches and enjoy them as they did before, urging residents to join in the effort.

As the situation in Majorca continues to unfold, the future of tourism on the island remains uncertain. With protests intensifying and businesses feeling the impact, the once-thriving holiday hotspot is now grappling with a significant decline in visitors.
