Looking Back at the 2024 Tennis Season

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Western Carolina women’s tennis team had a historic 2023-24 campaign, breaking records and showcasing their resilience in the face of adversity. Head coach Bret Beaver expressed pride in the team’s achievements, highlighting their ability to overcome challenges and grow stronger as a result.

In January, the Catamounts started the season with a 3-1 record, including a thrilling 4-3 road win against Western Kentucky. Chloe Schwarz’s masterful performance in the third set clinched the victory for the team.

February saw the Catamounts continue their winning streak, securing seven consecutive victories and breaking a program record for the longest win streak. However, injuries and illness towards the end of the month led to a defeat against ETSU.

In March, despite a winless record as a team, sophomore Jade Groen stood out with an impressive singles record, earning her the title of Southern Conference Player of the Month. Groen’s stellar performance on the court, paired with Madison Schwarz in doubles, showcased her talent and dedication to the sport.

As the regular season came to a close in April, the Catamounts secured a crucial win against Chattanooga on the road, marking their first victory over the Mocs on their home courts in program history. Despite a loss to Furman in the SoCon tournament, the team showed determination and grit throughout the season.

Looking ahead to the fall tournament schedule, the Western Carolina women’s tennis team will take some time off before returning to the courts, eager to build on their successes and continue their winning ways.
