Lorenzen pitches 5 scoreless innings in Rangers debut, shutting out Tigers

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a thrilling pitching duel, Michael Lorenzen shined in his Texas debut as the Rangers edged out the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Monday night. Lorenzen, who signed a one-year contract with the Rangers late in spring training, delivered five scoreless innings against his former team, allowing only three hits and striking out four.

The right-hander, who had been sidelined due to a neck strain, showcased his poise and experience on the mound, impressing Rangers manager Bruce Bochy. Despite facing tough jams, Lorenzen managed to work his way out with the help of key double plays.

The lone run of the game came in the fifth inning when Jonah Heim scored on Marcus Semien’s grounder after the Rangers loaded the bases. Detroit starter Reese Olson put up a strong performance, allowing just one run and striking out eight in 6 1/3 innings.

The Tigers had their chances, leaving eight runners on base throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Manager A.J. Hinch praised his team’s improved at-bats but lamented the lack of a big hit in the one-run game.

Jose Leclerc, David Robertson, and Kirby Yates combined to secure the shutout for the Rangers, with Yates earning his first save of the season. The win sets up an exciting second game of the series, with Jon Gray taking the mound for the Rangers and Casey Mize making his first home start for the Tigers since returning from injury.

Overall, it was a tight contest between two competitive teams, with the Rangers coming out on top thanks to a strong pitching performance from Lorenzen and solid defense when it mattered most.
