Law enforcement agencies descended on Macalester College in St. Paul on Tuesday, but there was no cause for alarm. The presence of multiple agencies was part of a drill to test their response to a critical situation.

St. Paul Fire Department Assistant Chief Tony Farina, who also serves as the hazmat coordinator for the city, led the large-scale training exercise. With a full hazmat team, police emergency management, and FBI agents on standby, the scenario simulated a range of potential threats, from chemical leaks to weapons of mass destruction.

Farina emphasized the importance of hands-on training, stating, “You can always read a book and watch on TV, but until you physically do it, it’s hard to remember it and to perform it perfectly.” Over 50 first responders participated in the exercise, gaining valuable experience and the opportunity to collaborate with counterparts from different agencies.

St. Paul Fire Department District Chief Ro Mokosso highlighted the significance of such drills in enhancing preparedness and fostering interagency cooperation. The training concluded at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving participants better equipped to handle real-life emergencies.

These exercises serve as a crucial component of emergency preparedness, ensuring that first responders are ready to effectively respond to any crisis that may arise. The collaborative effort demonstrated during the drill underscores the dedication and professionalism of the agencies involved in keeping the community safe.
