Parkersburg South Senior Maia Johnson Commits to Salem College for Volleyball
Parkersburg South senior Maia Johnson has made a significant decision in her athletic career by committing to join the women’s volleyball program at Division III Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C. Johnson, who was introduced to volleyball in middle school at the urging of her siblings, has seen her passion for the sport grow over the years.
Johnson’s dedication to volleyball paid off as she closed out her high school career as a Class AAA first-team all-state hitter, leading South to the state tournament for the first time in over a decade. Reflecting on her time at South, Johnson expressed her love for the sport and the camaraderie she shared with her teammates.
In addition to her success in volleyball, Johnson is also looking to make her mark in track and field at South, where she is aiming to join the school’s group of high jumpers at the state meet. Despite playing a variety of sports in her youth, volleyball has always been Johnson’s main focus.
Salem College won Johnson over with its colonial charm, reminiscent of Boston where her aunt resides. During her visit to the campus, Johnson connected with the coaching staff and players, feeling welcomed and at home. With a strong interest in the medical field, Johnson plans to major in biology and pursue a career in medicine, following in the footsteps of her family members.
Overall, Johnson credits her growth as a volleyball player to her time with the Tribe Volleyball Club and looks forward to the opportunities that await her at Salem College. With a bright future ahead, Johnson is excited to continue her athletic and academic journey at the collegiate level.
