Makabu sets sights on state title despite high bar

Centennial junior Voldy Makabu is feeling the pressure as he aims to defend his state high jump title in the Class 3A boys’ competition. Makabu, who only started high-jumping last year, surprised himself by winning the state title as a sophomore. Now, with a target on his back, he knows his competitors will be gunning for him.

Makabu recently jumped over 6-11 at the Twin City meet, making him the top jumper in the state and a top 10 jumper in the nation. Despite his success, he is constantly looking for ways to improve, seeking feedback from his jumping coach after each height clearance.

Heading into the final, Makabu is confident and motivated to clear the elusive 7-foot mark. His determination and drive to succeed are evident as he prepares for the competition on Saturday.

In another event, Illini Prairie Conference rivals Unity and St. Joseph-Ogden battled it out in the 1,600-meter relay, showcasing a friendly yet competitive relationship between the two teams. Unity’s Eric Miebach anchored the relay, narrowly holding off SJ-O’s Spencer Wilson for the win.

While both teams missed out on qualifying for the final, their camaraderie and competitive spirit were on full display. Both teams brought multiple relays to the prelims, showcasing their depth and teamwork.

Overall, the state track meet featured impressive performances from young talents like Danville’s D’Mario Jackson and Centennial’s Travion Wilson, who showed promise for the future. Seniors like Jayvon Irwin reflected on their accomplishments and looked ahead to the next chapter in their track careers.
