Man self-immolates outside Trump trial in New York

A 37-year-old man from Florida, Maxwell Azzarello, set himself on fire outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump’s trial is taking place. A self-described “investigative researcher,” Azzarello posted a conspiracy-laden manifesto online just moments before the incident.

In his social media posts, Azzarello expressed anti-establishment views and called for the abolition of the current government. On Friday afternoon, after the final jurors were selected for Trump’s criminal case, Azzarello self-immolated at Collect Pond Park near the courthouse.

He is currently in critical condition at Manhattan’s Weill Cornell Medicine Burn Center, while three NYPD officers and one court officer sustained minor injuries from the fire.

Azzarello’s manifesto, posted on Substack, described his act as an extreme protest against what he called a “totalitarian con” and warned of an impending “apocalyptic fascist world coup.”

Authorities reported that Azzarello threw pamphlets promoting conspiracy theories in the park before setting himself on fire. Police spoke to his family, who were unaware of his trip to New York, and confirmed that he did not breach any security protocols.

A registered Democrat and University of North Carolina graduate, Azzarello’s shocking act has left witnesses horrified. The incident occurred quickly, leaving onlookers unable to intervene as Azzarello set himself ablaze.

As Trump’s trial continues, with all jurors now selected, there will be no delay in the proceedings. This tragic event echoes a similar incident two years ago when a climate activist self-immolated outside the US Supreme Court in protest against the climate crisis.
