Managing diabetes through diet and exercise

New Delhi: The recent revelation of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s high glycaemic index diet has sparked a debate on the importance of managing diabetes through proper diet and exercise. Diabetes, a lifestyle disease affecting millions globally, is a chronic condition that can lead to severe complications if left unchecked.

According to the World Health Organisation, diabetes occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This results in high or low blood glucose levels, which can damage the body’s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.

In India, a staggering 10.1 crore people suffer from diabetes, with 13.6 crore being pre-diabetic, as per data from the Indian Council of Medical Research. Dr. V. Mohan, a top diabetologist, attributes the rising diabetes epidemic in the country to factors like high-calorie diets, obesity, lack of exercise, pollution, and contaminated food.

Managing diabetes involves eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, controlling portion sizes, and monitoring carbohydrate levels. Foods can be classified based on their glycaemic index, with high-GI foods causing rapid spikes in blood glucose levels. On the other hand, low-GI foods can help prevent diabetes and its complications.

In addition to diet, exercise plays a crucial role in managing diabetes. Aerobic exercises like cycling and swimming, along with strength training, can enhance insulin sensitivity and help control Type 2 diabetes. Research also suggests that a combination of diet and exercise may not only halt the progression of diabetes but also put the disease into remission.

Overall, a holistic approach involving a healthy diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle modifications is essential in effectively managing diabetes and preventing its complications.
