Mangrove trees planted as part of ‘Park and Plant’ initiative during Dubai Desert Classic

The Hero Dubai Desert Classic has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by planting 1,750 mangrove trees at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary in partnership with Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG). This initiative, funded by visitor parking fees, aims to offset the tournament’s carbon emissions and promote community engagement.

The trees were planted as part of the ‘Park and Plant’ initiative, which was supported by visitors to the Hero Dubai Desert Classic held in January. The tournament, won by Rory McIlroy for a record fourth time, encouraged attendees to travel via the Dubai Metro. Those who drove to the event participated in the initiative by paying a fee to park on site, which was then used to fund the planting of mangrove trees.

Simon Corkill, Executive Tournament Director of Hero Dubai Desert Classic, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the event’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and delivering a sustainable experience. As the first GEO-Certified event in the Middle East and part of the DP World Tour’s Rolex Series, the tournament is dedicated to promoting sustainability and engaging the community in conservation efforts.

The mangrove planting event at Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary was led by Corkill and his team, emphasizing the importance of mangrove trees in combating climate change. Mangroves play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide, regulating climate, providing habitats for marine and bird species, and protecting coastlines from erosion and flooding.
