Two wildfires near Flin Flon and The Pas have forced several Manitobans to evacuate their homes, as confirmed by the Manitoba government in a news release on Sunday. Evacuation orders have been issued for homes and cottages in the affected areas.
One resident, Keith Jaeger from Cranberry Portage, shared his harrowing experience of having to evacuate with little notice. Jaeger was out with friends when they noticed ash falling on them. Upon returning home, they were given just 20 minutes to evacuate, a scene Jaeger described as “terrifying.”
Despite the chaos, Jaeger remains optimistic, spending time with family and friends while waiting for the green light to return home. He mentioned hearing about some wreckage in nearby communities but is grateful that there have been no reports of property damage in Cranberry Portage.
Premier Wab Kinew assured affected Manitobans that the province is providing support, including shelter, food, and healthcare services. Representatives from various departments are at evacuation centers to assist those in need. Kinew also expressed gratitude for the assistance from neighboring provinces like Saskatchewan and Ontario, whose crews have been enlisted to help fight the fires.
As the wildfires continue to burn, Manitobans are coming together to support one another during this challenging time. The community’s resilience and the outpouring of support from neighboring provinces highlight the strength and unity of the region in the face of adversity.
