The New Ulm boys tennis team kicked off their 2024 season with a tough 5-2 loss against Mankato West, but there were plenty of positives to take away from the match. Gideon Heins and Ian Schotzko secured wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, showcasing their skills and determination on the court.

Head coach Pete Engeldinger praised Schotzko for his impressive victory, highlighting his strength and composure throughout the match. Despite the loss in varsity doubles, the Eagles put up a strong fight, with close matches in each doubles pairing.

Sam Gersich’s return to No. 1 singles posed a challenge for New Ulm, as he secured a decisive win against Maverick Johnson. Johnson, however, bounced back at No. 2 singles, defeating his opponent with a solid performance.

In a fourth doubles exhibition, Isaac Dittmer and Thomas Lehne showcased their skills with a convincing 8-1 victory. Engeldinger noted Dittmer’s potential for varsity doubles action in the future, highlighting his talent and contribution to the team.

Looking ahead, the Eagles face another tough matchup against Mankato East before heading to New Prague for their third section matchup. They will then return home to host Fairmont in a Big South Conference meeting on April 15.

Despite the initial loss, the New Ulm boys tennis team remains optimistic and determined to improve as they continue their season. With a talented roster and dedicated players, they are poised to make a strong comeback in the upcoming matches.
