The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a major coaching change, firing head coach Sheldon Keefe following the team’s first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Boston Bruins. Keefe, who took over as head coach in 2019, led the team to a record of 212-97-40 over parts of five seasons, including three straight 100-point campaigns.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving expressed the difficulty of the decision, acknowledging Keefe’s coaching abilities and character but stating that a new voice was needed to help the team reach its ultimate goal. Keefe’s coaching staff’s future remains uncertain as decisions regarding their status will be made in due course.
Despite regular-season success under Keefe, the Maple Leafs struggled in the postseason, with only one second-round appearance since 2004. The team’s recent first-round exits, including a Game 7 loss to the Bruins, prompted management to seek a change.
With Keefe’s departure, Treliving now has the opportunity to bring in his own choice for head coach. Experienced candidates like Craig Berube, Gerard Gallant, and Todd McLellan are potential options, while up-and-coming coaches like David Carle from Denver University could also be considered.
The Maple Leafs’ coaching change marks a significant shift in direction for the team as they look to overcome their postseason struggles and make a deeper playoff run in the future.
