Lucknow Super Giants’ Marcus Stoinis scripted history on Tuesday as he smashed his maiden Indian Premier League century against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Aussie star was promoted to the number 3 spot in the tall 211-run chase after Quinton de Kock’s early departure, and he did not disappoint.
Stoinis remained unbeaten on 124* and guided LSG to a remarkable 6-wicket win over the defending champions at their fortress. This victory marked LSG’s back-to-back win over CSK, showcasing their dominance in the tournament. Stoinis’ century was not only the highest score in IPL during a run chase but also the highest chase at Chepauk.
The all-rounder’s innings was filled with 13 fours and 6 sixes, displaying his aggressive approach and impeccable timing. Despite receiving little support from the other end, Stoinis continued his onslaught and completed his century in the 18th over.
In the final over, with 17 runs needed off 6 balls, Stoinis took on Mustafizur Rahman and smashed a powerful six followed by a boundary, putting immense pressure on the bowler. Mustafizur’s no-ball on the third delivery sealed the win for LSG as Stoinis found the gap on the free hit to secure victory.
Stoinis’ crucial partnership with Nicholas Pooran and valuable contributions from Deepak Hooda ensured LSG’s successful chase. The Australian’s spectacular performance silenced the Chepauk crowd and solidified his reputation as a match-winner in the IPL.
