Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap to produce Monopoly movie

Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is set to produce a film based on the classic board game Monopoly, which has been in development for over a decade. The announcement was made on Wednesday, with Hasbro Entertainment also on board as a producer.

Robbie, who most recently worked on the film Saltburn and last year’s hit Barbie, expressed her excitement about the project in an interview with Variety. She stated, “We want to make more films that have the effect that Barbie has. I don’t know if it has to be Barbie 2. Why can’t it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that.”

Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, believing it could be the next blockbuster. Zev Foreman, head of film for Hasbro Entertainment, highlighted the storytelling opportunities that Monopoly provides as one of the most iconic games in the world.

Barbie, which was the highest-grossing film last year, making $1.38bn globally, set a high bar for the Monopoly film to follow. The bestselling board game has a rich history, originally patented in 1904 as the Landlord’s Game by American feminist Lizzy Magie. It gained mainstream popularity during the Great Depression in the United States.
