Marietta business owners are bracing themselves for potential flooding as the Ohio River is predicted to crest by this evening. The National Weather Service forecasts the river to reach 40.5 feet in Marietta by 8 p.m. today, with the current measurement at 37.21 feet at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Flood stage for the Ohio River is 35 feet, prompting a flood warning that calls for major flooding in Marietta until Saturday evening.

Sheila Rhodes, the general manager of the Lafayette Hotel, and other business owners are taking precautions to protect their properties. Rhodes and her staff were seen moving items out of the hotel’s basement, expecting 3 to 4 feet of water. William Dorsey, owner of Riverview Antiques, is monitoring the situation closely and preparing to move items to higher ground if necessary.

Jennifer Tinkler of Marietta Main Street and Deana Clark of the Marietta-Washington County Convention & Visitors Bureau were also seen clearing out rooms in anticipation of flooding. The community is coming together to support businesses, with the Marietta Community Foundation seeking donations for its Hardship & Disaster Relief Program and the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce offering free storage to affected businesses.

Mayor Josh Schlicher emphasized the importance of preparedness, urging residents to stock up on supplies and seek higher ground if needed. The city is providing resources such as sandbags and storage space for trucks and trailers. Road closures are in effect, and residents are advised to stay informed through the city’s website and social media channels. Safety remains a top priority as Marietta faces potential flooding.
